Mt. Joy is an American indie rock band that has earned a devoted following with their blend of rock, indie folk, and psychedelic-inspired sounds, combining catchy melodies with introspective lyrics. The five-piece group consists of Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar), Sam Cooper (guitar), Sotiris Eliopoulos (drums), Jackie Miclau (keyboards), and Michael Byrnes (bass). Quinn and Cooper first connected in high school in Philadelphia, later reuniting in Los Angeles in 2016 to form Mt. Joy, inspired by a nearby mountain in their hometown of Valley Forge, PA. They met Byrnes through Craigslist, who introduced them to producer Caleb Nelson, and together they recorded four tracks under the Mt. Joy name, including their breakout single “Astrovan,” which surpassed three million streams and convinced the band to pursue music full-time. In 2017, singles like “Sheep,” “Cardinal,” and “Silver Lining” further established their reputation, leading to a deal with Dualtone Records and their self-titled debut album in 2018. The band quickly became a festival favorite, performing with The Lumineers and touring extensively until the pandemic. Subsequent releases, including Rearrange Us (2020), Orange Blood (2022), and live albums Live at Red Rocks and Live at The Salt Shed, showcased their evolving sound and dynamic performances. Their popular tracks such as “Ruins,” “Roly Poly,” and “Evergreen” highlighted their lyrical depth and musical versatility, while 2024’s single “Highway Queen” reaffirmed their emotional resonance. From festival stages to intimate venues, Mt. Joy continues to captivate audiences, blending heartfelt songwriting with expansive, immersive performances, securing their place as one of the most compelling and evolving indie rock acts of their generation.
