About Rebelution

Formed in 2004, by UC Santa Barbara students in Isla Vista California, Rebelution embodies Cali Roots with their pioneering blend of reggae rhythms, catchy pop melodies, gritty alt-rock riffs, hip-hop flow states, and calming acoustic instrumentation. The first two to meet, Marley D. Williams and Eric Rachmany, bonded over shared musical inspiration from artists such as Don Carlos and Black Uhuru. They soon joined forces with percussionist Wesley Finley after Marley heard him solo on an African drum in a World Music class. The fourth corner of the band was found in dynamic keyboardist Rory Carey. They began by playing live as much as possible, honing their sound and eventually releasing their first five-song EP which became a hit in Hawaii. The following tour experience in Hawaii got them hooked on the highs of playing live and served as the proof for the band that they found a special sound which was resonating with fans, inspiring them to put together their debut LP. June 8th 2007, Rebelution released their first album Courage to Grow, the single “Safe and Sound” was played in heavy rotation on radio stations up and down the California coast. The album was selected as iTunes Editor’s Choice for Best Reggae Album of 2007. The record also peaked at #4 of the Billboard Top Reggae Albums Chart. With the breakthrough popularity and corresponding busier schedule, Matt Velasquez, another founding guitarist and vocalist, left the band in 2007 due to fatigue from the rigorous touring lifestyle. 2009 saw the release of their second album, Bright Side of Life, this also marked the first of five consecutive #1 records on the Billboard Reggae Chart. Their third LP, Peace of Mind, released in 2012 with leading single “Sky Is the Limit”. Their next album, Count Me In (2014), includes the self-titled hit track as well as “Fade Away” and a collaboration with one of their greatest inspirations on “Roots Reggae Music (feat. Don Carlos)”. The album also included a collaboration with Collie Buddz on the track “Hate to Be the One”. As with previous albums before, Rebelution released acoustic and dub versions of the tracks to give fans even more ways to enjoy their songs. Their next record, Falling Into Place, earned them a GRAMMY nomination for Best Reggae Album in 2017. The album included tracks such as “Lay My Claim”, “Pretty Lady” and “Inhale Exhale (feat. Protoje)”. It was around this time they also released their Live at Red Rocks concert album, highlighting the group’s transcendent live performances. Rebelution’s dynamic live performances consistently sell out headline shows at iconic venues like Red Rocks and The Greek Theatre, and they've secured slots at major festivals including Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, ACL, and Glastonbury. Staying productive, in 2018 the group released their sixth studio album, Free Reign, including tracks “City Life”, “Celebrate”, and “Settle Down Easy”. Their next LP, In The Moment (2021), includes hit tracks “Satisfied” and “Old School Feeling”. Rebelution is consistently touring and releasing music including with their side project Unified Highway. They have a loyal live audience as a result of their confident and feel-good performances, matched by ambitious production incorporating swirling reverb and trippy delay, creating an immersive sonic landscape that feels both futuristic and nostalgic with a joyful atmosphere that brings fans back again and again.
