About Sublime
The iconic band from Long Beach California is the essence of SoCal ska-punk reggae rock. Formed in 1988, led by frontman Bradley Nowell on lead vocals and guitar, Eric Wilson on bass, Bud Gaugh on drums and Brads’ dalmatian Lou Dog as the band mascot. The band would release three LPs, 40oz. To Freedom (1992), Robbin’ the Hood (1994), and the self-titled Sublime (1996). The Sublime album reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200 which included No. 1 track “What I Got”. The last record was released after the tragic and sudden passing of Bradley Nowell at just 28 years old on May 25th, 1996, due to a heroin overdose. The posthumous release was an incredible celebration of the music Bradley led in the creation of, but one that also brought with it a deep mourning at his loss. You couldn’t attend a house party anywhere in the United States in the 90s without hearing the bands’ hit anthems. Songs such as “Santeria”, “What I Got”, “Doin’ Time”, “Badfish”, “Wrong Way” and many more are still immediately recognizable across generations. Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh kept the music going by forming the Long Beach Dub Allstars in 1997. The group included Sublime familiars such as Michael “Miguel” Happoldt, Marshall “Ras MG” Goodman, and Todd Forman. The group eventually disbanded in 2002 after some members of the band broke a “no-drug vow” they had taken together at the start. 2009 saw Eric and Bud bring in guitarist, singer and Sublime fan Rome Ramirez to form a new band to continue performing and writing music inspired by Sublime. The group would go by “Sublime with Rome” after legal issues surrounding using the Sublime name from Nowell’s estate. That group would carry the torch performing Sublime songs to large audiences and also release their own original music in a similarly inspired style. Now, the coming of age of Bradley’s son Jakob Nowell has marked the beginning of a new era for Sublime. Although Jakob says “My dad, Bradley, was Sublime’s only frontman”, he is now assuming that role with a voice and cadence very reminiscent of his fathers. The excitement for Jakob carrying the musical legacy of his father is palpable in the audiences of their shows. To cement and commemorate the new group’s formation, Sublime teamed up with artist Stick Figure to release their first new track in 28 years based on a previously recorded freestyle by Bradley and also featuring vocals from his son Jakob and Scott Woodruff from Stick Figure. The revival of Sublime through Jakob Nowell joining original members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh along with the release of the new track, “Feel Like That”, has created a surge of excitement among fans. This new trio honors the music of Sublime while creating new music for the enjoyment of present and future generations.
