Bio

The California Honeydrops are a vibrant, genre-defying band from the Bay Area, blending blues, soul, funk, and R&B into a timeless retro-soul sound that exudes joy and energy. Formed in 2007 by lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lech Wierzynski and drummer Ben Malament, the group began as a busking duo performing on Oakland streets and subways, quickly captivating audiences with their raw, unfiltered sound. Expanding to include a horn section and upright bass, their lineup now features Lech on guitar and trumpet, Ben Malament on drums, Yanos “Johnny Bones” Lustig on saxophone, Lorenzo Loera on keyboards and guitar, and Beaumont Beaullieu on bass, with frequent collaborators Scott Messesmith, Oliver Tuttle, Leon Cotter, and Miles Lyons enhancing their live performances. Renowned for electrifying shows that feel both spontaneous and meticulously musical, the band effortlessly blends improvisation with soulful virtuosity, transporting audiences to the sounds of New Orleans, Memphis, and Chicago while adding their own modern twist. Over the years, The California Honeydrops have released a string of critically acclaimed albums, including Call It Home and A Higher Degree, consistently pushing musical boundaries while honoring traditions set by legends like Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, and Muddy Waters. Their name, a nod to the street musicians’ “honey jar” tradition, reflects their commitment to shared joy and connection through music. Currently touring North America in support of their latest album, Soft Spot, The California Honeydrops continue to captivate audiences with infectious rhythms, heartfelt performances, and a spirit that reminds listeners that music is a universal language of love, celebration, and connection.
