About The California Honeydrops
The California Honeydrops are a musical phenomenon that transcends genres and eras, blending a unique mix of blues, soul, funk, and R&B to create a retro-soul sound that's as timeless as it is fun. With roots in the heart of California's Bay Area, the band has garnered a devoted global following, captivating audiences with their high-energy performances and authentic soulful sound that puts a smile on everyone’s face. Formed in 2007 by lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lech Wierzynski and drummer Ben Malament, The California Honeydrops began as a busking duo, playing on the streets and subways of Oakland. Their raw, unfiltered approach to music quickly won over the public, and it wasn't long before they expanded their lineup to include a horn section and upright bass, solidifying their signature sound. The band's name, "The California Honeydrops," is a nod to the tradition of street musicians leaving an open instrument case with a few coins or a "honey jar" for people to drop donations while they enjoy the music. This humble beginning reflects the band's commitment to the essence of music—shared joy and connection. The California Honeydrops are known for their electrifying live performances, where the stage is transformed into a time machine that transports audiences to a musical past that's rooted in the soulful sounds of New Orleans, Memphis, and Chicago. Lech's charismatic stage presence, soulful vocals, and mastery of the trumpet and guitar are the driving force behind the band's dynamic sound, which is bolstered by the incredible talents of the other band members. Every member of the band is a virtuoso of their instrument, from frontman Lech Wierzynski on guitar and trumpet, to Ben Malament on drums, Yanos “Johnny Bones” Lustig on saxophone, Lorenzo Loera on keyboards and guitar, and Beaumont Beaullieu on bass. The group is also regularly accompanied by Scott Messesmith on percussion, Oliver Tuttle on trombone, Leon Cotter on sax and clarinet and Miles Lyons playing the trombone and sousaphone. The level of mastery over music they each possess enables them to collectively improvise seamlessly even without ever following a setlist for any of their live shows. Over the years, the band has released a series of critically acclaimed albums, each a testament to their evolving style and commitment to delivering music that moves the soul. From their self-titled debut album to more recent offerings like Call It Home and A Higher Degree, The California Honeydrops have consistently pushed the boundaries of their musical vision while staying true to their roots. What sets The California Honeydrops apart is their ability to channel the spirit of musical legends like Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, and Muddy Waters while infusing their own unique modern flavor. They've found the perfect balance between honoring tradition and pushing the boundaries of what music can be. As they continue to tour the world, delighting audiences with their exuberant performances, The California Honeydrops remain ambassadors of a musical tradition that transcends time and space. They remind us that at its core, music is about celebrating life, love, and the joy of connection. With every note they play, The California Honeydrops invite us to join them on a journey through the rich tapestry of American musical history, reminding us that no matter where we come from, there's a shared language of rhythm and soul that binds us all.
